We have now entered the time of year traditionally known as “The Dog Days of Summer,”

This period of time, generally embracing the entire month of August, has its origins in centu-ries past, being named after the “Dog Star,” Sirius. It has always referred to the hottest time of the year, the time that is gener-ally known as the most stagnant time of year, marked by a dull lack of progress.
In ancient times, Dog Days were popularly believed to be an evil time "when the seas boiled, wine turned sour, Quinto raged in anger, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid, caus-ing to man burning fevers, hys-terics, and phrensies" according to Brady’s Clavis Calendarium,

The Prologue of Tuck Everlasting, set in the first week of August, says: "These are strange and breathless days, the dog days, when people are led to do things they are sure to be sorry for after."

In more recent times, the dog days have taken on a financial significance, as stock markets tend toward their most sluggish time of year during these days. And, the heat, which can become quite oppressive, tends to wear people out more easily, causing us to be “dog tired.”
Pastors and other church leaders generally dread the dog days of summer for the same reasons — sluggishness, fatigue, and even people doing and saying things that they may later regret

As a whole, church life tends to slow down during these days, and that includes everything from atten-dance to offerings, to the fulfill-ment of our purpose.
The truth is, that we all need a break, and to rest from our labors. God Himself set the standard for that at creation! I am writing these words just hours before my family and I leave for vacation.

But even though our activities slow down, I pray that your spiritual life will not experience “dog days;” may instead you grow this month in the Lord, ready to take on fall with a new vigor!

Pray, Go!

Good morning!

I want to encourage you to join us at First Assembly Sunday morning, as we continue examining the promise-keeping names of God. This week, we will see Him as "The Great Physician," which perfectly compliments our theme this winter, "No Illness is Too Difficult." I am praying and believing God that many will receive a healing touch from Almighty God this Sunday!

Then, at 6:00 Sunday evening, we will have our Winter Banquet at the Huck Boyd Center. This is a catered meal, so you won't need to bring anything. The choices are baked steak or baked stuffed chicken. If you have not yet signed up to come Sunday night, please reply to this message AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to let me know which meat you would like to order. There is NO CHARGE for this banquet, but we will be receiving an offering to cover the expenses. Also, we will enjoy music that night by the "What 4?" and other special music from our own congregation.

Onward and upward,

To all who have ever been in need: you should not miss services this Sunday morning at First Assembly! God revealed Himself long ago as The Provider, and He is ready to give YOU a fresh revelation of that covenant/promise this weekend! Would you join us Sunday for a powerful morning together?

Then at 6:00 Sunday evening, we'll be getting back into the Book of Acts, to see "How It's Done!" Chapter 11 records how the Early Church saw great success, and how we can, too! You won't want to miss it!

We hope to see you on Valentine's Day!

Wednesday night the Rainbows finished up our unit on God made me special. Our final worksheet was a picture of a crown with jewels. So, we used wrapped candy and made a "Special Crown". Then the kids were supposed to give their crowns to someone they thought was special. The kids all decided on their own who they wanted to give their crowns to... most gave to their moms but a few gave to their Dads and Grandparents.

While we were talking about being special two of the boys in my class, who are 3 years old, recapped what we talked about last week. They told me the story of Samson and Delilah from last week. Boy was I surprised... To finish up our night the kids individually told me the memory verse: Your hands made me. Psalms 119:73. To help remember this verse we played hot potato with a balloon. They loved playing with the balloon. We had a great evening!

They also took some time to give thanks to God for protecting one of their members from what could have been a serious accident. Wednesday night was an awesome night for the Discovery Rangers! We had a record setting night, the total attendance for the class was 14 boys. That's the largest class we have had in the last three years. Because we had such a large number of boys we couldn't even do our lesson....shortage of notebooks. (this will not be a problem this week, I will plan for 14+)

Even though all the boys didn't have a notebook we still discussed part of the lesson for the week. The Bible lesson's title was Kindness and was from the book of 2nd Samuel. We talked about how David showed kindness to Mephibosheth and then discussed how we need to show kindness know matter how we have been treated. We had a little fun after going through the story. I told the boys that if they wanted to play a game they needed to spell "Mephibosheth". Even though they didn't spell it correctly I showed them kindness and let them play a game

The merit we are currently studying is Space Exploration and so we discussed some of the manned space missions that have taken place over the last 40 years. Then briefly looked at the current space shuttle and talked about how it works.

Like I said it was a great night and we hope to see all the boys again this week.
