Spelling Contest....Mephibosheth

Wednesday night was an awesome night for the Discovery Rangers!  We had a record setting night, the total attendance for the class was 14 boys.  That's the largest class we have had in the last three years.  Because we had such a large number of boys we couldn't even do our lesson....shortage of notebooks.  (this will not be a problem this week, I will plan for 14+) Even though all the boys didn't have a notebook we still discussed part of the lesson for the week.  The Bible lesson's title was Kindness and was from the book of 2nd Samuel.  We talked about how David showed kindness to Mephibosheth and then discussed how we need to show kindness know matter how we have been treated.  We had a little fun after going through the story.  I told the boys that if they wanted to play a game they needed to spell "Mephibosheth".  Even though they didn't spell it correctly I showed them kindness and let them play a game The merit we are currently studying is Space Exploration and so we discussed some of the manned space missions that have taken place over the last 40 years.  Then briefly looked at the current space shuttle and talked about how it works. Like I said it was a great night and we hope to see all the boys again this week.

Did someone say ICE CREAM!

"Thank You Pastor for the Ice Cream!"  That's what the Discovery Rangers were saying Wednesday night after they won the offering contest.  Last week Pastor Dave said that which ever Royal Ranger group brought the most offering he would take them to the Chicken Inn for ice cream.  Well....the Discovery Rangers won the contest.  WAY TO GO BOYS!  Mike and I would like to say thanks as well...because we got ice cream too. Before we went to get ice cream we did get a chance to discuss the bible story that we have been going over each week.  It was so awesome to see all the boys answering questions about the story and understanding what the story is about.  So please continue to pray for the Royal Rangers Ministry.

Walk around...the walls of Jericho will fall

We had another awesome night with the Discovery Rangers.  It has been so much fun over the last few weeks getting to know all the new boys and just seeing them change.  Last night we decided that we needed to break-up the class into two patrols.  It was really neat to stand back and see how the boys interacted with one another and were able to setup two groups and new patrol guides.  Once the new patrol was setup, Lieutenant Commander Mike spent some time with the boys discussing the bible story.  The story for the week had to deal with the walls of Jericho and how God gave Joshua special instructions.  These instructions from God were that Joshua was suppose to take his men and walk around the walls for seven days.   For six days these men walked around one time and on the seventh day they walked aroud them SEVEN TIMES and they sounded the trumpets.  Once the trumpets sounded and the men yelled the Walls came crashing down!!  (The story can be found in the bible: Joshua 6:1-20) After the story and during our devotion time we had an opportunity to discuss with the boys what God was doing.  The boys had a hard time understanding why the men had to walk around the walls.  We explained to them that because the men obeyed God....he kept him promise and took down the walls of Jericho.

The night of the Knots

Tonight during our Royal Rangers meeting we went over our bible study & devotion, but we also discussed a couple different types of knots.  In the Royal Rangers ministry we try to take the boys camping at least once a year.  When the groups go on this camp out it's nice if the boys are able to perform certain tasks for the camp out.  As many of us know...usually a "true" camping trip will require the use of rope.  The ropes may be used for multiple things: to setup the tent, hang up clothes, tie up something, etc.  When using the ropes there are many different knots that can be used, depending on what you are wanting to do.  So tonight we discussed the Figure 8 Knot and the Square Knot.  Both of the knots are pretty easy to tie, but can be very effective when needing to tie something.  Each of the 10 boys we had in class tonight were able to tie both knots.  The evening with the boys went very well, and I really believe that God is going to wonderful things with this group of boys.

Discovery Rangers are now on the Web!

This is a test post to make sure that the new Discovery Rangers web page is working correctly.  With the new web page we will now be able to provide up-to-date information on our Discovery Rangers group.  This may include weekly devotions, Bible stories, merit announcements, and our quarterly lessons.  We will be posting activities and fund raisers that the boys will be participating in.  To go along with the activity announcements we will be posting photos from the events.
