“No Form of Loneliness is Too Overwhelming”
October 27th, 2008 0 CommentsSunday, October 26
Loneliness is more than wanting companionship; it is the feeling of being disconnected, cut-off, aliented from people, bringing with it the feeling of emptiness and isolation. Often, loneliness comes from feeling different or rejected. Someone can be surrounded by people, and still be lonely. Surveys suggest that from 20-30% of Americans are lonely. If we locally are a microcosm of America, that means from 1200-1800 people in Phillips County are lonely; from 300-400 people in Phillipsburg are lonely; and from 20-30 people gathered in this room are lonely.
There are three types of loneliness: situational (lonely because of something that has happened, such as a move, the loss of a loved one, etc.); developmental (often adolescents are still trying to balance their need between the need to be alone and the need for companionship); and internal (brought on by feelings of self-esteem & vulnerability)
I. God understands your loneliness
A. Jesus himself was despised and rejected — Isaiah 53:3
B. Jesus was separated from His Father — Matthew 27:46
C. Jesus sympathizes with your problems — Hebrews 2:17
II. God will be your companion
A. He wants to be your Friend — John 15:14,15. YOU are why He came in the first place! And when He left, He sent His Holy Spirit to come and be with us.
B. He is committed to this relationship — Hebrews 13:5; Matthew 28:20; 2 Corinthians 4:8,9
C. There is nowhere you can go that He can’t find you — Psalm 139
D. When you’re at your lowest, put your hope in God — Psalm 42:5-11
III. God chooses to use His people, the body of Christ, to help fill this void
A. We’ve looked this month at the Great Commission, what about the Great Commandment? — John 15:17; 13:34
B. Let’s look at your place in the body — every part has a different function, and is very important
C. The importance of fellowship can’t be overstated
D. The focus of the church — working together to accomplish His purposes
IV. Your prayer request: that God will bring the people into your life that He wants you to be close to
“Every One”
October 27th, 2008 0 CommentsPastor’s message for Sunday, October 19
TEXT: 2 Peter 3:9
Before we focus on “every one”, we have to consider “anyone”; in other words, God is interested not just in “the world”, but in each individual.
I. God is not willing that anyone should be lost
A. Think of the worst sinner you know — God does not want that person lost!
B. Think of some of the worst criminals known to mankind, such as William Bonin and Ted Bundy — both found Christ before they were executed, because God didn’t want them to be lost!
C. Think of some of the worst dictators you know, such as Omar al-Bashir and Osama ben Ladin — God doesn’t even want them to be lost!
II. God wants everyone to be saved
A. There are 4.4 billion in the world who have not had an adequate witness
B. If God is concerned about the worst of offenders, what about those who have not heard?
III. Two reasons why the Rapture has not yet occured
A. God wants more people to be saved — and the Church has stepped up to the plate in this matter. It is reported that an average of 4 1/2 people per minute are coming to Christ! 40 new churches are planted daily! The world wide Assemblies of God has over 5400 missionaries in 168 countries of the world!
B. He is giving us more opportunities to reach the lost
IV. What can we do to reach the lost now?
A. Be baptized in the Holy Spirit, according to Acts 1:8
B. Begin at home — accept YOUR missions appointment to the field!
C. Recognize the work of missionaries who take this gospel to cultures and lands away from here, throughout Kansas, the United States, and the ends of the earth
1. Pray regularly for the missionaries we support
2. Make a monthly faith promise so that our church can support our missionaries financially
3. Give generous offerings everytime a missionary visits our church
There are four absolutes concerning the lost:
1. God does not want even one soul lost.
2. Those who never hear the gospel will be eternally lost.
3. Jesus commanded us to tell them.
4. If we don’t, we will be held responsible.
