“We need some Heroes” – Sermon Notes

June 30th, 2008 0 Comments
Ezra 8:21-23

I’ve been contemplating lately what our church needs, and initially, I came up with quite a list — we could use a new building (and the resources with which to build it), we could use more workers, more passionate worship, and the list goes on.

But I have narrowed my list down to one thing (other than God):  our church is in desperate need of heroes!  Not “super-heroes” that I used to fantasize about being when I was a child, but we need ordinary humans, surrendered to God’s will.  Those people will truly be the heroes that our church needs.

Ezra is a biblical example of an ordinary man surrendered to God’s will.  His name does not immediately come to mind if we were to construct a “heroes list” from the Bible, but he was a great success, and led his people to great success.  The church needs people like Ezra!

We need:

1.  Sincere believers
        A.  We need people with not only a head knowledge of the Lord, but a heart knowledge as well.
        B.  We need people whose faith is not cheap, but tested.
        C.  We need people who know that “this thing works”!

2.  Fervent pray-ers

        A.  We need people who live in desperation for God
        B.  We need people who will fast
        C.  We need people who will be committed to pray until God shows up!

3.  Bold witnesses

        A.  We need people who aren’t afraid to stand up for God — telling of His saving power
        B.  We need people whose primary concern is how their actions will be interpreted by heathen.

We’ve had enough — too many — church goers, and feel-good, social club, duty-doers.  We need some heroes, like Ezra.  Now, how are we going to get those?  We’re not going to pray them in from other churches and communities.  We’re going to raise them up from within our own congregation.  God wants YOU to get off the sidelines and jump in with both feet!  Ask yourself this:  “If the church is going to move forward, will it be in spite of me?”  If the answer is “yes”, then you need a heart change this morning.  Surrender your life, your plans, your desires, your feelings to Almighty God, so He can make a hero out of you!

Believing God for the impossible,

We need some heroes

June 27th, 2008 1 Comments
I’ve been contemplating lately what our church needs.  Initially, I came up with quite a list — we could use a new building (and the resources with which to build it!), we could use more workers, we could use creative thinkers, a heart for the lost, a passion for worship, and on and on my list goes………

But really, other than God, we only need one thing:  we need heroes!  God has always accomplished His purposes through human beings — not “super heroes”, but mortal people surrendered to His will.

Sunday morning, I challenge you to come and find out how YOU can be a hero!  We will also be kicking off our summer theme, “No Relationship is Too Broken”.  This spring we saw first-hand that no person is beyond forgiveness; I get goose bumps thinking about the relationships that God is going to restore this summer!

Eric Earhart – From prison to pulpit

June 22nd, 2008 0 Comments

Good morning, church family!

I am so pumped for this Sunday! This is the culmination of our spring-long emphasis on “No Person is Beyond Forgiveness,” and a lot of planning, preparation and prayer have gone into the weekend.

Eric Earhart, pastor at Upper Room Assembly of God in Gatesville, North Carolina will be our speaker in the 10:30 a.m. service.  I don’t know if you have seen Eric’s story on nothingstoohardforgod.org, but it is  powerful! He spent 42 months in prison for drug trafficing, and at 6′5″, he was quite intimidating.  His life of crime, violence and drugs began at the age of 11, but God began to speak to him when he stuck a rifle down someone’s throat, but it misfired, sparing the man’s life.

Eric is truly a living example that no person is beyond forgiveness.  At 6:00 Sunday evening, we will be sponsoring the City-Wide BBQ at the city park.  This is a free event for the entire community, and we encourage you not only to be there, but bring someone who doesn’t know the Lord! After we eat, Eric will be sharing his testimony, and giving an opportunity for people to accept Christ.

If there is some area of the BBQ that you would like to help out with, please contact either me or Bridgit Smith TODAY.  Bridgit’s cell phone number is 302-1430.

Thanks, and we’ll see you Sunday!!

Father God – Sermon Notes

June 17th, 2008 0 Comments

“Father God”
Galatians 3:26-4:7

Some lessons I’ve learned about God as our Father:

1. God loves me unconditionally
2. God provides for all of my needs
3. God is my Protector and Defender
4. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree (in other words, I need to start acting more like my Father!)
5. I have a great inheritance!

This Sunday, Eric Earhart will be speaking.

From Prison to Pulpit

June 16th, 2008 0 Comments

Eric Earhart is living proof of God’s transforming power. A passion for Jesus replaces cocaine trafficking in his life. Eric’s story tells how his faith helped him through a 42 month prison stint, but more importantly shows that no person is beyond forgiveness and truly Nothing is to Hard for God.

Eric Earhart will share his story after a free City Wide barbeque sponsored by First Assembly of God Church at 6:00 pm on June 22nd, at the Phillipsburg City Park. Local businesses helping sponsor, include Phillips County Title and Abstract Co., An Angel’s Paradise, TJ’s Toys, S & S Digital Design, Isernhagen Tax and Accounting, Don’s TV and Mid America Real Estate.
